Remote Work Best Practices

Working remotely is different from working in an office building. To make the most of remote work, consider these best practices.

1. Create a Dedicated Workspace
Having an area that is set apart for work helps establish a professional mindset. Choose a space that is comfortable and free from distractions. Make sure you have good lighting if you will be participating in video meetings.

2. Check Time Zones
Always check time zones before scheduling meetings or setting deadlines. Tools like World Time Buddy or time zone converters can help you find times that work for everyone. Scheduling meetings at times when all team members can attend shows respect for everyone’s time.

3. Use Headphones for Better Focus
Wearing headphones can significantly improve your concentration, especially at home where there may be distractions. They can also be helpful during virtual meetings by blocking background noise and allowing you to engage more fully in discussions. Noise-canceling headphones are particularly effective.

4. Turn Video On
When in a video meeting, always have your video turned on (unless your supervisor tells you otherwise). This helps everyone stay engaged and focused.

5. Build a Community
Remote work can feel lonely, so make an effort to build relationships with the people you work with. Participate in virtual team-building activities, informal chat channels, or regular social gatherings to strengthen connections and maintain team morale.

6. Maintain Clear Boundaries
Set boundaries with family or housemates to reduce interruptions during work hours. Let them know that focused work time is important to you and the people you work with. It’s also essential to protect your downtime by setting personal boundaries for after-hours work.

7. Prioritize Well-being
Self-care is important in a remote work setting. Include activities in your daily routine that increase physical and mental well-being. Regular exercise, mindfulness practices, and hobbies can help reduce stress and make you happier.
