Job Interview Checklist

1. Pre-interview Preparation

  • Research the company to understand its mission, products, and/or services. 
  • Understand the job description and be prepared to answer questions about why you are the best candidate for the job.  
  • Read recent news or developments about the company. 


2. Documents

  • Make sure your resume is updated and tailored to the job description. 
  • Have your resume, cover letter, and any other relevant documents ready to share electronically. 
  • Keep 5-10 printed copies of your resume and notes nearby. 


3. Prepare for Common Interview Questions

  • Tell me about yourself. 
  • Why do you want this job? 
  • Why should we hire you? 
  • What makes you a good fit for this position? 
  • What are your strengths and weaknesses? 
  • Describe a time you faced a challenge and how you overcame it.

4. Practice

  • Practice answering frequent interview questions and prepare brief, confident responses. Also, be prepared to answer behavioral questions about your previous experiences and how you handled various situations. 
  • Use the STAR approach (situation, task, action, result) to frame your replies to behavioral questions. This strategy allows you to present clear examples of your talents and accomplishments. 
  • Practice interviewing with a friend, family member, or mentor in the position of the interviewer. This prepares you for actual interview situations and allows you to practice answering common interview questions. 

5. Dress Professionally

  • Wear professional clothes appropriate for a face-to-face interview. It shows the interviewer that you are serious, prepared, and respectful. 
  • Have a clean and neat hair style.  
  • Make sure your clothes are clean, pressed, and fit well. 


6. Day of the Interview

  • Arrive 10-15 minutes early. 
  • Bring all the documents you need. 
  • Turn off your phone or set it to silent. 
  • Be polite and professional to everyone you meet.

7. During the Interview

  • Maintain good posture and smile naturally. 
  • Answer questions honestly and quickly. 
  • Focus your responses on your skills, experiences, and achievements that are relevant to the position.  
  • Provide examples of what you did in previous situations at work and how it resulted in great outcomes. 
  • Always remember to ask questions when you have the opportunity. Here are some examples of questions you could ask: 
    • Could you explain the team dynamics? 
    • When should I expect feedback? 
    • What do new employees typically find surprising after they start? 
    • How has the company changed since you joined? 
    • Could you share an instance where the company’s core values directly influenced a business decision? 


8. Follow-Up

  • After the interview, send a thank-you email to each of your interviewers within 24 hours. 
  • In your thank-you email, mention the main things discussed and reinforce your interest in the position. 
  • Reflect on the interview and identify any areas for improvement.  


Virtual Interview Preparation Checklist

For virtual interviews, follow all above tips plus the following:

1. Technology Setup

  • Download and test the interview platform (e.g., Zoom, Microsoft Teams, Skype). 
  • Familiarize yourself with basic features such as mute/unmute, camera on/off, screen sharing, etc. 
  • Test your internet speed to make sure it's good enough for the interview. 
  • Have a back-up plan if your internet speed is not good enough. 
  • Test your computer/laptop and webcam. 
  • Make sure your computer is charged and plugged in. 
  • Make sure your microphone and speakers work properly. 
  • Close any programs and browser tabs on your computer that you won’t need. 
  • Silence your phone and notifications. 
  • Position your camera at eye level for a natural look. 


2. Environment Preparation

  • Choose a quiet, well-lit room for the interview. 
  • Reduce distractions and background noise. 
  • Tell others in your household about the interview so they don’t interrupt you. 
  • Have a clean and neutral background or use a virtual background if appropriate. 
  • Sit up straight. 
  • Do not sit in bed when doing the interview.


3. Practice

  • Practice interviewing using a webcam so you can see yourself. 
  • Practice maintaining eye contact with the camera and speaking clearly. 
  • Practice interviews with friends, family, or career counselors to get feedback on your performance and identify areas for improvement. 


4. During the Interview

  • Join the interview platform five minutes before the scheduled time. 
  • Maintain good posture and smile naturally. 
  • Focus on the camera. 
  • Be prepared to share your screen for presentations or portfolio reviews.
