What to know before applying
Applying is simple
- The application is free. You only pay tuition for the courses you take.
- There is no obligation to enroll.
- No ACT or SAT is required.
- It takes about 20 to 30 minutes to apply.
- You can save your application and finish later.
Time and tech expectations
Most new students start with 4 credits, including 1 credit of religion, and should plan for 9 to 15 hours of coursework each week. Your time may vary depending on your situation, English skills, and pace.
You’ll need reliable internet. A smartphone can be used for your initial courses, but a computer is recommended for certificate courses. Review full tech requirements.

What are the key steps for applying?
The application takes most students 20–30 minutes and is completely free. You only pay tuition for the courses you take. You’ll move through five steps, and you can save and return at any point.

Sign in or create a Church account. You’ll use the same account to access your application and, later, the BYU‑Pathway Portal. There is never an application fee.

Enter your name, email, country of residence, and other basic details, so we can match you with a local gathering and see what’s available where you live. Your information is used only for admissions and gathering placement.

Education and English proficiency
Share your highest level of education. If English isn’t your first language, you’ll complete a free English assessment within the application. Need to build English skills first? EnglishConnect is free and available before or alongside your studies.
U.S. students: You can submit previous college transcripts for transfer credit review after enrollment, not during the application itself.

Choose your program and submit
After reviewing your information, we’ll show you the programs you qualify for. Pick one, review the CES Honor Code, and submit. Updates come by email.

Get your decision
If you’re admitted, you’ll receive a welcome email within five business days with everything you need to access your student portal and register for courses. You’ll begin with foundational PathwayConnect courses before continuing with certificates and degrees. You’ll also receive 10%, 25%, or 50% off your PathwayConnect tuition through the Heber J. Grant Tuition Discount after completing a short lesson.

How much is tuition where I live?
Tuition is set by country, so the rate you pay depends on where you live. Every enrolled student receives a guaranteed tuition discount of 10, 25, or 50%. You’ll see your exact rate inside the application, or you can check the tuition by country page now. It opens in a new tab, so you won’t lose your place here.
How do certificates and degrees fit together?
BYU-Pathway provides access to online certificates and degrees from BYU-Idaho and Ensign College. You'll begin with foundational courses, then earn marketable certificates that count toward an associate degree and a bachelor's degree. This certificate-first approach helps you earn useful credentials along the way instead of waiting years to complete your degree.
What is a gathering?
A gathering is a weekly meeting with a small group of fellow students and a service missionary. It may be held online or in person, depending on where you live. At gatherings, you'll practice what you're learning, lead discussions, and build relationships with other students.
What are the religion courses?
Religion courses are part of every degree program and focus on Jesus Christ and His teachings. These courses can help you strengthen your faith, build character, and connect spiritual learning with your education and goals.
Every student takes religion courses, whether they are a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints or a friend of the Church. You'll learn in a welcoming environment where you can grow spiritually while preparing for your future.
What is the CES Honor Code?
The CES Honor Code is a commitment to standards of honesty, conduct, and dress shared across schools in the Church Educational System. You'll review and agree to it before submitting your application. You can read the full Honor Code before applying.
